Journaling during Lent

With Lent just around the corner, some of you may be looking for ideas on how best to use your time with journaling. For those of you who don’t know, Lent is a period of 40 days leading up to Easter, during which Christians traditionally practice fasting, self-examination, and spiritual discipline. Journaling during Lent can be a valuable tool for reflection and growth, allowing us to explore our beliefs, values, and experiences in a more intentional way. Here are some suggested journal prompts for Lent:

  1. What does Lent mean to me? Take some time to reflect on your personal understanding of this season. What emotions or memories does it bring up? How have you celebrated Lent in the past, and how do you want to approach it this year?
  2. What am I giving up for Lent? Many people choose to give up something they enjoy during Lent as a way of practicing self-discipline and sacrifice. What have you chosen to give up this year, and why? How do you think this practice will impact your daily life?
  3. What am I taking on for Lent? Instead of or in addition to giving something up, some people choose to take on a new spiritual practice or habit during Lent. Have you decided to do this? What does this practice involve, and what do you hope to gain from it?
  4. What is my relationship with God like right now? Take some time to reflect on your spiritual life at the moment. How do you feel about your relationship with God? Are there any areas where you feel distant or disconnected? Are there any practices or habits that help you feel closer to God?
  5. What is my relationship with myself like right now? Lent is also a time for self-examination, so it can be helpful to reflect on your relationship with yourself as well. How do you feel about yourself at the moment? Are there any areas where you feel stuck or dissatisfied? Are there any practices or habits that help you feel more grounded and self-aware?
  6. What is my relationship with others like right now? Relationships with others can be a source of both joy and challenge. Take some time to reflect on the relationships in your life. Are there any that feel particularly challenging right now? Are there any that bring you a sense of connection and support? What role do you want relationships to play in your life?
  7. What do I need to let go of? Lent is a season of release and surrender. What are you holding onto that no longer serves you? Is there anything that you need to let go of in order to move forward or grow? What might it look like to release these things?
  8. What do I need to embrace? In addition to letting go, Lent can also be a time for welcoming new things into our lives. What do you want to embrace or cultivate in your life right now? What might it look like to make space for these things?
  9. What am I grateful for? Gratitude is an important practice for cultivating a sense of joy and contentment in our lives. Take some time to reflect on what you’re grateful for at the moment. What brings you joy or a sense of fulfillment? How can you cultivate more gratitude in your daily life?
  10. How can I serve others during Lent? Lent is also a season of service and giving. What opportunities do you have to serve others in your community or beyond? How can you use your time, talents, or resources to make a difference in the world?

These are just a few journal prompts to get you started during Lent. Remember, journaling is a personal practice, so feel free to adapt these prompts or come up with your own based on what feels meaningful to you. Whether you’re looking to deepen your spiritual practice, explore your emotions, or simply record your daily experiences, journaling can be a powerful tool for reflection and growth during this season of renewal and transformation.
